Ask Dr. Kaia for Nov. 3, 2004 Q: I didn't breed my mare this year, hoping to get and early foal next year. Can you give me some tips on how to do that?
A: Sure. First, you need to make sure that your mare is healthy. Her health history will tell you that. Secondly, you should put her under lights to get her cycling early.
As you may know, a mare's cycle is controlled by photoperiod. This means the number of daylight hours each day. This is why most mares are fertile in the late spring and summer which is the natural breeding season due to the long days.
You can simulate this by putting a bright light in her stall; it needs to be bright enough to read by for it to work. Put the mare in around 3-4 PM before it gets dark and leave that light on until 8 PM. You can easily put it on a timer.
When she starts to cycle, after around 60 days of supplemental light, she will still go through a transitional cycle which is long and has an unpredictable ovulation. After that, she should be cycling normally and ready to breed. If there are any other concerns, cultures, diagnostic ultrasounds, and biopsies should be done early so that she will be ready to breed as soon as possible.
