Ask Dr. Kaia for Oct. 27, 2004 Q: My horse is rubbing and itching his mane and tail until the hair has all fallen out. What is causing this?
A: As usual, I really have to see the horse to know for sure, but there is a likely cause this time of year. Those annoying little gnats that come out around 4 in the afternoon this year are called Culicoides and they can bite on the mane and tail areas, and in sensitive individuals, they can cause intense itching. The good news is that with proper treatment, this can be controlled.
Your veterinarian will probably prescribe antihistamines and or steroids to stop the itching. Some topical creams can be very helpful, and, of course, you need to keep the culprits off your horse.
It is best to have the horse checked to make sure that there is not some other problem going on. There are other conditions that can cause itching, especially of the tail.
