Q: What can I do to protect my animals if the event of a volcanic eruption?
A: A timely question, to be sure! By the time this goes to press we may have experienced one.
Firstly, now that we can predict eruptions somewhat, try to be prepared in advance. This means that you should have adequate food, water and any medicines on hand. Stockpile enough to last for several days since an ash fall can cause power and phones to to out. Contact your veterinarian regarding extra medications that you may need.
Then, stay inside as much as possible. Only take pets out for potty breaks, and wear a mask or wet bandana yourself. dust the pets off before letting them back inside the house. Keep windows closed and put damp towels in any drafty door jambs or window sashes.
If you do have to travel, remember that the ash can damage your car engine and take plenty of water and food for you and your pets if they are travelling with you. Take enough for several days. Take a cell phone and charger or spare battery, or at least take the phone fully charged. When the ash begins to fall, find a place where you can park until it stops. Remember that it can get as dark as night, so take a flashlight with you, too.
Keep your pets on a leash in case they become frightened so that you aren't out chasing after them in the ash fall.
Put any large animals inside if you can. If you do not have a barn, maker sure that the have hay and water, and keep them and yourself as calm as poss- ible to minimize exertion and intake of ash into the lungs.
Above all, do not panic, wear a mask, and stay put until the ash fall has stopped.
