Ask Dr. Kaia

for Sept. 29, 2004

Q: My dog is scratching his ear and shaking his head and I was wondering if I could come in and get some ear mite medicine for him.

A: Actually, no, you can't. The reason is that if your dog is shaking his head and scratching, there is only a small chance of it being ear mites. Mites more commonly affect cats.

Dogs frequently have yeast infections, bacterial infections, and foreign bodies. The foreign bodies are usually grass awns, but sometimes we find ticks in the ears.

These problems need to be differentiated, and only your veterinarian, using an otoscope can tell what is in the ear and get it out for you.

Please never put anything in your dog's ear without first having your veterinarian check inside the ear!!
