Ask Dr. Kaia

for Sept. 22, 2004

Q: My dog is acting just like an Alzheimer's patient; getting lost, wandering, etc. What is wrong with her?

A: First we will run some tests on her blood to rule out organ failure as a cause of her dementia. If it all comes back normal, we will diagnose your dog with Canine Cognitive Disorder. This is a form of dementia that affects pets, similar to dementia in people. There are treatments available that are effective.

Surprisingly enough for those of you who don't think that we are what we eat, one of the best treatments is actually a prescription diet high in anti-oxidants. There is also medical treatment.

If you notice mental changes in an older pet, contact your veterinarian for help.
