Q: My dog is scratching like crazy and I was wondering what is causing this problem? We do have fleas, but not a lot.
A: If your dog develops flea bite sensitivity, just one flea bite can cause this severe reaction. These poor dogs are in misery. Your veterinarian will check for areas that are inflamed and for signs of fleas. This kind of allergy or sensitivity is treated by removing fleas, usually using topical drops like Advantix or Frontline, and then a cortisone shot will likely be given to stop the itching.
Food allergies are common in dogs, usually to wheat or corn, but can be to other things. Usually, a diet change will cause the itching to stop. Sometimes a cortisone shot will be needed while food is being changed to something new. Your veterinarian will be able to tell you which is most likely.
If your dog is doing a lot of scratching, take him to your vet. A scratching dog is miserable and also irritating!!
