Q: I read that fish oil is good for my dog with heart failure. Is that true?
A: It does seem to be true that the oils in fish are protective in animals as well as in people. The oils actually help to prevent the loss of heart muscle and promotes healthy heart muscle and heart rhythm, as well.
The oil to use is labled Fish Oil, not cod liver oil, and it is in capsules so it doesn't tast bad. This is a safe dietary supplement for your dog, and one that you can buy at most grocery stores.
Your dog is at risk for heart problems if his teeth develop a lot of tartar and gingivitis results. The bacteria in the plaque and tartar can enter the bloodstream and attatch to the heart valves. This can cause valve problems and congestive heart failure. This is one of the most important reasons to take care of your dog's teeth.
Dental cleaning should be done every year to keep teeth and gums healthy.
