Q: What should I do? My dog was just bitten by a wild animal. We don't know what kind of animal it was, but it broke the skin.

A: First of all, this is the best reason to make sure that your dog is always current on rabies vaccination. This applies to outdoor cats, as well. Rabies is not common in our area, but it does occur in some wild animal, usually bats and skunks, but other animals can be affected. The best protection is vaccination. Ordinarily, when an animal bites, it is detained for 10 days to see if signs of rabies develop. It may be killed and it's brain sent in for diagnosis. There is no way to do this with a wild animal that you can't catch or kill. The dog should come in for evaluation where we will clean the wound and clip the hair and probably treat it with antibiotcs. Rabies vaccinations are good for 3 years protection in adult animals, so check to see if your pets are current.
