Q: Do talking birds understand what they are saying?

A: Interestingly enough, some of them certainly do! Some just mimic sounds and others actually learn language. Most notably, the African Grey is known to have a large vocabulary and be very demanding with their human language. Dr. Irene Pepperberg has done a lot of research on their intelligence and found that they understand colors, numbers, and commands. Go on line and look her up for some interesting reading.

I have two of these birds and I can attest to the fact that they do know how and when to use many words. They make great, but messy, pets. Be aware that they need a LOT of attention.
