Q: Why is ultrasounding my mare important? Why can't you just palpate her to see if she is in foal?

A: The main reason is to check for twins. If the mare is detected pregnant with twins early enough, usually around days 15-18, one twin can sometimes be crushed. Sometimes the pregnancy will be reduced to a single embryo naturally, especially if they are touching each other.

Nature does not favor twin pregnancies in the mare because the twins usually are not carried to term and the result is abortion. IF they do proceed to term, they are usually small and not vigorous. There can also be one twin that is smaller or dead or mummified. Sometimes the twins can become entangled and difficult to deliver requiring intervention and rislk for the mare.

At any rate, it is best to look for twins or other abnormalities rather than just palpating.
