Q: You told me that me dog needs to have his teeth cleaned. I am wondering why and if I can afford it.
A: When tartar builds up on a dog's teeth, the gums become inflamed, known as gingivitis. The gums will start to bleed and you may notice terrible bad breath in your dog.
The worst part of this scenario is that the bacteria in the tartar can go into the bloodstream and collect in the heart valves and cause heart problems later in life. It may seem expensive, but it will lengthen your dog's life and save money in the future if you will keep his teeth clean.
I usually run a special on teeth cleaning so that the total cost is around 75 dollars or less if your dog does not require anesthesia. This is much less than you will pay elsewhere.
You can accustom your dog to this procedure by brushing your dog's teeth regularly with an ultrasonic toothbrush. Just give me a call and I can show you how to do this. It is only hard for the first few times, and your dog will get used to it.
