Ask Dr. Kaia for June 16, 2004 Q: I have heard that there are horse chiropractors. Is this true and where are they?
A: This is a very good question. There are chiropractors that work on horses. In Washington, this is supposed to be under the direction of a veterinarian. There are veterinarians that practice chiropractic on horses. These are doctors with degrees of DVM, or DC.
There are also licensed massage therapists that work on horses and they are not required to be under a veterinarian's supervision. These people will also have a degree and a license to practice.
Whether chiropractic works is a good question, although many people seem to find benefits.
You should ask anyone who presents him or herself as a chiropractor what there credentials are. This is a website with a lot of information on this subject.
http://www.chirobase.org/06DD/chirovet.html I caution you to have your horse examined by an experienced equine veterinarian first, before calling a chiropractor, due to the fact that there is almost always a conditon which we can detect and treat. People without the proper credentials are breaking the law and supporting this practice may prevent your horse from receiving proper veterinary care.
Have a great summer and happy riding!
