Ask Dr. Kaia

for June 9, 2004

Q: It always seems like we lose our cats in the spring. What is going on with that?

A: Spring is the time of year when coyotes and other predators have young to feed so they are hunting even more than usual. Birds of prey will strike and take your cats and other small pets, as well as coyotes do.

I have treated several pets that were mauled by coyotes or wounded by birds of prey.

The best protection that you can give your pets is to keep them under your roof with you at night. Also, consider fencing your yard to keep other animals out. Even if you live in town, other people's animals can attack yours, so fencing your yard is very important.

We have bald and golden eagles year around now near the Y of highways 12 and 410 and large hawks and owls everywhere, so take care that your small pets and livestock are protected. After these birds' babies have left the nest, hunting pressure will be less, but they still hunt. One bald eagle nest was found to contain 22 cat collars. Considering how few cats wear collars, what does that tell you about their taste for cats?

Until, next week, keep your pets safe!
