Q: I am thinking of getting a family horse and I was wondering if I should have it checked out before I buy it?

A: Smart question! Even if a horse is given to you FREE, you should have it vet-checked before you accept it. YOu can spend anywhere from 100.00 to several hundered dollars depending on the horse and what you plan to do with it.

Certainly, the general health and soundness should be evaluated. Any special requirement that you may have should be addressed at that time.

Q: My dog has been rejected from all the groomers in Yakima, and I am thinking of putting him down since he also bites at home. What should I do?

A: First of all, your dog needs behavioral counseling. I am happy to work with you on this problem, but it is hard work and you have to be constantly vigilant and always discipline your dog at home.

What has happened here is that your dog has become the boss of your house; the alpha dog of your pack. We need to literally "take him down a peg". You need to place yourself in the alpha role. Do not let him subordinate you. If he tries to, you must threaten him. I will show you how to use the alpha roll; this places the dog in a submissive position, with his belly and throat exposed. You may have to repeat this several times.

Please seek professional help with this if you are not familiar with the theory.

We have a couple of these dogs that come in for grooming and they are now reformed.
