Ask Dr. Kaia

for Apr. 21, 2004

O: I heard that ticks are bad this year and I was wondering what kind of collar or drops to use to keep ticks off of my animals?

A: Yes, ticks are exceptionally bad this year for some reason. I have even seen a mule that was terribly infested.
Flea and tick collars have been mostly replaced by the monthly flea and tick drops that are applied externally. You can get these from your veterinarian or over the counter in many stores. Just be sure to place the drops behind the pet's neck so that they aren't licked off during grooming.
A badly infested animal should be bathed with insecticidal shampoo. We found out that it is ok to use certain shampoos of equines as we had to do with the mule. Please ask me if you need particular information on this. Do not apply the drops until the next day after bathing the pet. If you have an engorged tick that is attached firmly, you may want to take the animal to your vet for removal, but many ticks can safely be picked off.
