Ask Dr. Kaia for Mar. 31, 2004 Q: You told me my horse's teeth needed "floating" every spring. What is that and why is is needed?
A: A horse's teeth erupt continuously through out his life until, around age 30, there are no more teeth left in the head and the horse will have missing teeth.
Because of the way that the horse's mouth is conformed, and this is an individual thing; a good or bad mouth, the teeth wear evenly or unevenly. There can be sharp enamel points in even young horses. These can make chewing or being ridden with a bit uncomfortable for the horse. These points are easily removed by what we call floating. Actually, it is rasping with manual or mechanical tools to smooth the teeth. Snaffle bit horses may need floating twice yearly especially the first three cheek teeth.
In older horses, hooks can develop in the front and back of the mouth requiring more extensive filing. In poorly conformed mouths and horse's with missing teeth, more extensive work may be needed. Some horses need to have the front teeth (incisors) filed down so that the molars can meet and grind.
It is a good idea to have your veterinarian check the horse's teeth at spring vaccination time. Horses should be vaccinated each spring. Don't forget West Nile Virus Vaccination, either.
