Q: I was wondering if a swelling in my horses hock area was anything serious or not?
A: This type of swelling should always be seen by a veterinarian with experience with legs. Your vet will examine and x ray the horse's hock to determine the cause of the swelling. Sometimes, the swelling can be temporary, like what we call a capped hock. Sometimes the swelling can be more of a blemish such as a thoroughpin. There are what are sometimes called bog or bone spavin which really aren't true conditions, but colloquial terms for sympoms we see. Certain conditions such as spurs and chips can be serious and may require surgery.
Be sure to have any swelling in a horse's joint looked at before using your horse. Call me if you have any questions.
