Ask Dr. Kaia for Mar. 17, 2004 Q: How long after my puppy gets her shots until she is immune to diseases?
A: If your puppy is still nursing, she may have some maternal antibodies that could interfere with here reacting to the first vaccine, but we recommend that you start at 6 weeks anyway.
The next shots will be given 3 weeks later, and at that time, she will be partially protected but still vulnerable in some cases. Until she receives her third set of shots, she should be isolated from other dogs as much as possible. After she has had the third round of vaccinations, wait another 2 weeks before socializing your puppy. At that point she should be fully immune.
Don't forget yearly boosters for your older dogs, especially ones that are 10 or over as they are vulnerable as they age. Some dogs such as Rottwielers and Dobermans are very sensitive to Parvo virus and should receive yearly vaccinations.
We have been seeing a lot of Parvo lately, so make sure that your pets are protected.
