Q: I am thinking of breeding my mare by transported semen and I was wondering what is involved and what I can do to increase my success?

A: First of all, make sure that your vet is experienced in reproduction. This cannot be miminized. Even with all the experience in the world, this can be a tricky project at times.

The most important thing that you can do is to make sure that you use a mare that has a nice predictable cycle. It is also helpful if your mare shows behavioral estrus that is easily detected. If she does, keep a calendar record of her cycle for at least 2 cycles before ordering the semen. Obviously, putting the mare under lights in the fall is a good idea so that you get an early start in the spring.

If you have a mare that has irregular heat cycles or prolonged period before ovulation, I would not use that mare. These mares can be difficult in the best of conditions, but with transported semen, they are very expensive to use.

Best of luck, and happy breeding season!
