Ask Dr. Kaia for Feb. 18, 2004 Q: My cat has been urinating blood and now he seems not to be able to urinate at all?
A: First of all, inability to urinate is a medical emergency which can result in your cat's death if not treated in time. Urine will back up in the bladder, up the ureters, and into the kidneys, causing pressure damage to the kidneys which is permanent. You need to take your cat to your veterinarian immediately.
The cause of this problem is diet related. Certain minerals and combinations of minerals and mucous form crystals and plugs that can obstruct the urethra of male cats mostly, but females are also afftected.
You need to treat any cystitis that is present, your vet will prescribe antibiotics. She will also analyze the urine to find out what type of dietary change the cat will respond to. Be sure to keep your litter box clean at all times to encourage frequent urination and make sure that fresh water is always available.
