Ask Dr. Kaia

for Feb. 11, 2004

Public Service Announcement: Our valley is experiencing an outbreak of Parvo Virus. This Disease affects dogs of all ages but especially puppies, older dogs \and Rottweillers and Doberman Pincers. Please make sure that your pet is vaccinated.

Q: Why are horses foundering around here for no apparent reason?

A: This is a fascinating subject! It seems that some genetic changes in grass hay seeds, have caused a very high carbohydrate content in our grass hays, during last summer in particular. Weather conditions may be involved but for whatever other reasons, tests on the forages show that there are abnormally high soluble carbohydrate levels in grass hay. This is causing insulin resistance in succeptible horses which causes what we call" metabolic syndrome" Or Syndrome X, which also occurs in humans. Founder is a feature of this condition.

Please be vigilant with any overweight horses that you may have and contact me or your veterinarian regarding this mysterious condition.
