Ask Dr. Kaia for Feb. 4, 2004 Q: What is Cushing's Disease? You said that my horse might have this condition.
A: Cushing's disease is caused by a tumor of the Pituitary gland that causes excess Cortisol to be produced. The horse or pony will usually fail to shed in the spring leaving a long unkempt coat. The horse may tend toward obesity. And the most troublesome feature is that the horse is prone to founder or laminitis.
There is another condition that may be confused with Cushing's Disease; we refer to that as Metabolic Syndrome. The clinical signs are similar but the treatments are different.
An interesting treatment for Cushing's, which has always been expensive to treat, is the use of the herb chasteberry. You can read more about this by doing a search on the internet.
Contact your veterinarian if your horse show any of the above signs, or excessive thirst, or urination, which are also signs of Cushing's Disease.
