Q: I did not have my horse's shoes pulled this fall and now I notice that my horse is sore on both front feet. What is causing this?

A: Two people asked me this during the last week. Both horses have deep cuppy feet and are not generally tenderfooted.

What seems to have happened in both cases is that the feet became packed with snow and when that happens, the sole which normally doesn't really contact the ground with a foot shape like this, is now functionally in contact with the ground and is bearing weight. The sole is not designed to bear weight and will easily become bruised if it is forced to bear the horse's weight.

The foot can take some time to heal when it is bruised, and it may or may not develop abscesses in the process. Treatment will vary depending on the horse. Your veterinarian will help you with the diagnosis and treatment, but you can help prevent this kind of injury by removing your horse's shoes in the fall or by having special pads put on that will push the snow out of the hoof.
