Ask Dr. Kaia for Dec. 10, 2003 Q: My dogs are scratching and acting the same way they do in the summer when the have fleas. Could the have fleas even in winter?
A: Yes, it is possible that your dogs could have fleas even in winter. Usually, the cold temperatures cause the fleas to die off but in the event of a warm winter like this one, fleas can live and continue to bother your pets. If you notice itching and scratching in the tail area, you may have fleas that have over wintered. The same treatment is recommended as for the summer season. You need to clean your home and animal bedding, Usually an insecticide bomb or spray can be used to eliminate flea eggs. Topical applications such as Advantage or Adavantix are a great solution, ridding your pet of fleas in one day. Consult your veterinarian if you have other itching concerns.
