Ask Dr. Kaia for Dec. 3, 2003 Q: I was wondering about what to do with a cat in my house for the first time at Christmas with all the decorations and all. Are any dangerous?
A: First of all, the tree itself can be easily tipped over by a playing cat. The tree will just be a giant cat toy! Be very careful to avoid tinsel. Cats find it irresistible and if they do swallow it, it can be deadly. Any ornaments with sharp hooks should be avoided. Glass ornaments can be a hazard if they get knocked off your tree.
A great alternative to a tree is a garland. One can be made using everything that would go on your tree and some boughs. This can be kept out of the cat's reach.
Be careful too of poinsettias which can be toxic if ingested. Remember too that people food and treats, including alcohol, are not for pets so keep them away from your animal friends.
