Hi, All!
This Week: Operating System Changes - Part 1
I received this Email from a reader.
"Hi, I have installed Office 2000 on a new computer with Vista. When you try to use Outlook it says that the wab.dll file is missing. Microsoft site tells you to change the wab32.dll to wab.dll. This computer doesn't have that file. "If I can get it from another computer, where do I put it? I even went back and installed Office 97. Everything worked except for Outlook and I couldn't even open it. Any suggestions? Thanks"
I responded with this email :
"Thanks for writing, sounds like you have quite a problem. Attached is a copy from my XP machine of WAB32.dll. I would remove any and all office programs from your pc and reinstall 2000 then copy the WAB32 file c:\program files\common files\system, which is where this one came from. I then got this email:
"Hi, Thanks for trying to help me out. It turns out that you just can't use Outlook on Vista. You have to download Windows Mail, which is new for Vista. I was also told that you couldn't use Office 2000 (that is where I was having the Outlook problem). I'm not so sure that is true. We have used Excel and Word a little and haven't come across any problem---yet. I 'use' Computerfaq a lot for information. Thanks for being out there to help."
We have a classic issue: "What you and cannot do with new operating systems." Microsoft and Apple both work hard to make their new O/S's work with older programs, but at some point the O/S's move past the point where it is possible to make everything work.
Next week what should you know before upgrading and using older programs. '
