March 28, 2007 Hi, All! This Week: When is it time to retire my PC? Part - 1
I have been working on several PC's these last few weeks, a couple running Windows 98 and one running Windows 95. Before I misplaced my copy of Windows ME, I would upgrade the older Windows to ME. This did two things; first, it would refresh all the program files for Windows, and second; ME had fewer bugs and was easier to use, from a technician's view. But I cannot do that now, and even if I did, it may help repair some problems and may even give the PC a bit more life.
If the owner did not need a PC to be very fast, to have a lot of memory, or to have a very large hard drive, the older PC's with the minimum hardware would still work well. But now, Microsoft is no longer offering support for any of the older Windows O/S's; if something stops working, there may be no fix. Another reload may help, but to have someone do any work on an older PC may just be a waste of money. Both Tiger Mountain and I charge about the same for the same type of work, so if you have us do a reload and cleanup, you may be looking a $100 bill. That is 1/5th to 1/10th the cost of a new machine--faster, more memory, supported products, and it's new! Oops! I see the "bottom of the page " I will finish this next week.
'Til next week,
Robert
