Hi, All!

This Week: An update on Microsoft Word viewer.

Dear Mr. ComputerFAQ:
Using Microsoft Outlook Express, I am unable to open an increasing number of attachments to emails. A friend suggests the problem is that they are written in a very new version of Microsoft Word. I can't afford to buy Microsoft Word. Is this likely the problem? Is there a free application I can get so that I can open these?

Thank you for your note. Yes, it is true that Microsoft encourages us to remain current with its latest versions. At least it gives us options to many of their products, making it possible to use some of its software even if we are not a customer.
The free product you ask about is called "Word Viewer," a free download from Microsoft's web site. Type this URL in your browser: <http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=95e24c87-8732-48d5-8689-ab826e7b8fdf> or go to Microsoft.com and enter "word viewer" in the search box. When you get to the download center, take the time to read a very good article on how to download and install the viewer and what to do if there are any problems with it.
Another option would be to save the attachment as a file. Then use the "open with" option on the right mouse click drop-down menu, and then click on "Internet Explorer." If you have the current version of I.E., it will open the most recent versions of Word and many other document types (HTML, DOC, WRI, JPEG, TIFF, ETC). A multi-step/click option but it works also.
I do not know if Netscape would work as a word viewer, and if any Netscape user would test and let me know, I will put an update this column later. Hope one of these options works for you!
