Hi, All!

This Week: Questions about CD disks and devices Part - 2

3. Please explain the + and - on different discs for recording or writing? Example: CD-R, CD+R, DVDRW, DVD+RW, etc.

"DVD+R and DVD+RW formats are supported by Philips, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Ricoh, Yamaha and others.

DVD+R is a recordable DVD format similar to <http://www.webopedia.com/DidYouKnow/Hardware_Software/2003/CD_R_drive.html>CD-R. A DVD+R can only record data once and then the data becomes permanent on the disc. The disc can not be recorded onto a second time.

DVD+RW is a re-recordable format similar to <http://www.webopedia.com/DidYouKnow/Hardware_Software/2003/CD_RW_disk.html>CD-RW. The data on a DVD+RW disc can be erased and recorded over numerous times without damaging the medium.

DVDs created by a +R/+RW device can be read by most commercial DVD-ROM players.

DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM formats are supported by Panasonic, Toshiba, Apple Computer, Hitachi, NEC, Pioneer, Samsung and Sharp.

These formats are also supported by the DVD Forum.

DVD-R is a recordable DVD format similar to CD-R and DVD+R. A DVD-R can only record data once and then the data becomes permanent on the disc. The disc can not be recorded onto a second time. There also are two additional standards for DVD-R disks: DVD-RG for general use, and DVD-RA for authoring, which is used for mastering DVD video or data and is not typically available to the general public.

DVD-RW is a re-recordable format similar to CD-RW or DVD+RW. The data on a DVD-RW disc can be erased and recorded over numerous times without damaging the medium.

DVDs created by a -R/-RW device can be read by most commercial DVD-ROM players."

The above explanation was from web site, http://www.webopedia.com; I found it a very good source for answering questions one may have on the high tech industry.

4. One unopened disc that was included with this bundle is labeled HP-Encarta 2000 On-line, Microsoft Works and Microsoft Money NA. Are these additional programs or is this a sample to advertise these programs? I won't use what I don't know or where it goes.

The CD's of Encarta and Money are good disks. Both are usable programs but may not have all the "extras" a purchased copy may have, but if you try them and like them, upgrading to the retail versions involves just a download and a credit card number.

'Til next week,
