Oct. 20, 2004 Hi, All!
This Week: Microsoft Windows Update Utility Program
In my column dated October 13, 2004, I mentioned a utility program called Windows Update. This utility has been available since windows '98, has been included in the installation of Windows since Windows ME, and has a large role in Windows XP. Windows Update is an automatic utility program that goes to the Microsoft Update web site on a scheduled basis to check for updates to your Windows operating system. This can include the service packs, updates that are used to fix bugs, security issues, and update features of your operating system. There can also be new hardware drivers for your printers and other hardware, and if other people have found problems in the current driver programs, they can be fixed and sent to you before you may even know you have a problem. This is a free service provided by Microsoft as part of the maintenance and support of their products.
In Windows ME and XP, Windows Update is turned on at the time of installation and checks the web site daily for updates. If you do not turn on your PC or do not connect daily, you can manually download the updates. The most important reason for making sure this is turned on is the security updates that fix the holes in Windows that allow hackers to get to your PC.
