Aug. 18, 2004 Hi, All; This Week: A word (or 346) to the wise.
"The Republican convention is in a few weeks in New York. Both the convention and New York are primary targets for terrorist attacks. The attack might well include a computer virus attack. The current threat against financial institutions could well be a skillful effort by terrorists to draw our attention away from their primary targets. How about an update and reminder for everyone to scan for these recent viruses and update their virus protection? I intend to do it myself."
This is a reminder from our publisher. There is a valid warning in his words, as we have found out recently that terrorist groups do have computer experts and probably can and will mount an attack against the World Wide Web, and the American financial systems in particular. The best defense in this case would be a good offense and that would mean (to reiterate) virus protection of your PC, the use of firewalls (software or hardware that protects your PC from hackers on the WWW), and the protection of your personal information on your PC. I would think that a terrorist having many identities stolen from unprotected PC's would be as good as gold.
In these uncertain times, protecting your PC from all the "baddies" in the world is very important, not only for your own self, but maybe the world in general. Let,s hope that Microsoft has learned and fixed the security holes in Windows XP with their update, Service Pack 2, which will help us in doing our part. However, if you are on an older version of Windows (3.1, 95, 98, ME), you are still vulnerable and have to protect your PC, as Microsoft will not be issuing any major fixes for older operating systems. Mac users also should give serious consideration to security; just because hackers have not targeted Apples/MACs much in the past does not mean terrorists will not. They look for the best target of opportunity, and that in this case may be MAC's!
