This Week: Some help from a reader

My computer is the original iMac with 8.1 operating system--a dinosaur of sorts. I have trouble opening some photos that are e-mailed to me. I've discovered that I can forward these difficult e-mailed photos to myself and then open them by opening my e-mail on Lewiscounty.com's web site!! They have the software that I can't have on my computer. I discovered this all by myself, and am a little surprised that no one ever has suggested this to me! I hope this helps someone. To those who are bothered by viruses: you may want to know that Macs rarely get them, since most have to do with Microsoft's Windows software. Macs have their own system, of which Windows is a knockoff.

Thank you for your email hint that will be of help to many people I am sure. I did some checking on your virus statement, and yes, it is true. But I point out one statement I ran across from an advertisement for Norton AntiVirus for the Macintosh: "It's important not to get lulled into a false sense of security just because Macs catch so many fewer viruses than Windows-based PCs. Unfortunately, they still happen from time to time."
I believe that Macs are not hit by viruses for a couple of reasons; first, hackers just like to attack Microsoft; and, second there are fewer Macs used in business, so hackers cannot take down a corporation with a virus. If you are using Microsoft Office for the Mac, both Mac Office and PC Office are programmed the same way, and they have the same virus vulnerabilities. So you need to be just as vigilant on your Mac antivirus as a PC user.
