Hi, All;

This Week: Working with the Internet Options dialog box, Part 3

Last week we looked at the Internet Options dialog box to set your "home Page." This week we will look at another option on the Internet Options dialog box. To find the Internet Options dialog box, click on "tools" on the IE menu bar. A menu will drop down; click on "Internet Options;" a drop-down box will display with several tabs across the top of the box.

The "General" tab will be displaying; this tab is where you can set your home page, (the web site that displays whenever you start IE).

The next section of the Internet options drop down box is "Cookies." "Cookies" are small text files left on your PC from web sites that you have visited. They tell the web sites that you have been there before, if you have logged in and if you have an ID. Yes, your passwords are kept in cookies also, but in an encrypted form, so even if someone does get into your cookie file, they cannot get too much information. With this section of Internet Options, you can delete all cookies (make sure you know all your ID,s and passwords of every site for which you have an ID). Delete other Internet files, like the ones that hold the pictures that come from web sites (these can be very large files and take a lot of space, with very little useful data). With the next button on this section, you can tell IE how much of your hard drive to use for this file--20 MB is the default, but you make it as small as you want. I set mine to 5MB. There are many other options available in this "Internet Option" box; I will cover more of them in future columns.

'Til next week, (ComputerFAQ#191)

Robert
