This Week: Potpourri

First item this week is from last week; my offer to help reuse old computer stuff. I have an offer of an HP500, an old but reliable black-only printer. If you have a need for this printer, drop me a note and we will connect you up.

Next, I had an interesting weekend working on a laser printer. For some time this printer had been fading half of the print out. With the help of a CD from "FIXYOUROWNPRINTER.COM", I was able to fix the problem. There is a mirror in the laser scanner section of the printer, close to the cooling fan. In computer equipment, the cooling fan draws the air over the hot parts, rather than blowing across them. So in the case of the dirty mirror, dust from the fan built up on the mirror surface, causing poor resolution of the print-out. The CD was very good, not terribly professional, but it did get the information across. In this case, the CD ran for 25 minutes and showed every screw and part that needed to be removed and then how to clean the parts. IT then showed how to put it all back together again. It took me about an hour to do the procedure, and I felt safe tearing into the printer.

"FIXYOUROWNPRINTER.COM" has CD's and/or repair kits for some laser and ink printers. However, most ink printers are so inexpensive it is cheaper to buy a new one than trying to fix it.
