Computer FAQ

for Jan. 28, 2004

Hi, All;

This week: Microsoft Reverses

"Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition support was scheduled to end on January 16, 2004. However, continual evaluation of the Support Lifecycle policy revealed that customers in the smaller and the emerging markets needed additional time to upgrade their product. Therefore, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows ME will continue to be supported after January 16, 2004." This, a quote from Microsoft's support web page. So Microsoft listened to its clients and found that they were not ready, willing or able to upgrade their PC's just because Microsoft said they should.

What does this mean for us? It means that Microsoft will be fixing any remaining security flaws in Windows 95/98/ME and that we will still be able to get paid support if we need it.

But, like I said in ComputerFAQ #171 (January 7, 2004), if you are still running Windows 95/98/ME and it is working for you, I recommend not thinking about upgrading. Your hardware probably would not support Windows XP. While XP is a good solid operating system, I have never been one to upgrade or to encourage others to do so just for the sake of upgrading. If you don't have a need for a new PC that will come with Windows XP, then don't; work with what you know and like. The support for Internet Explorer will continue, and as long as the new releases of I.E. support the older versions of Windows, there should be no problem with staying with Windows 95/98/ME. I would keep current with each new version of I.E., as that is where many of the security issues are, but if you keep current and updated, your PC data should be safe.

'Til next week, (ComputerFAQ#174)

Robert
