for Jan. 21, 2004 Hi, All;
This week: Keyboard shortcut keystrokes
Last week we looked at two keyboard shortcut keys: "Ctrl a" (include entire document) and "Ctrl z" (undo last action). There are three pages of shortcut keys in Microsoft's Word97, and Microsoft's Works has at least that many shortcut keys also.
True, most functions performed by shortcut keys can be done with the mouse and toolbars but are harder to find and take much longer to do.
So I like to remember the most common shortcut keys: "Ctrl a" Include the entire document "Ctrl c" Copy highlighted text to clip board "Ctrl x" Cut highlighted text to clip board "Ctrl z" Paste contents of clip board to document All of these shortcut keystrokes are actually original to word processing programs in the dark ages before Windows and mice.
As you look through some of the shortcuts, especially those that need three or more keys pressed, think about how hard and how much remembering was required to run PC's before Windows.
A couple of new keystrokes I found were the trademark and copyright symbols, "Alt+Ctrl+t" for trademark and "Alt+Ctrl+c" for copyright ©.
How do you find these awesome keystrokes? In your word processor program, click on "Help" or press the "F1" key or press "Alt h," and the help menu will drop down from your toolbar. Then click on "Contents and Index" or press "Alt c." When the Contents dialog box displays, click on the "Index" tab and type "shortcut keys" and press "display;" this will display all of the shortcut keys available. Click on the "options" button and click on "print topic" to have a printout of the keys.
Another shortcut: any toolbar command containing an underlined letter may be actualized by pressing "alt" and the underlined letter; i.e., "Alt h" for the help menu.
'Til next week, (ComputerFAQ#173)
