for Nov. 26, 2003 Hi, All;
This week: Spam!
Boy, am I disgusted! I just checked my email, and in 24 hours I had 25 emails, and only one was a valid note. The rest was just disgusting Spam!
I keep wondering: if Spammers have the right of free speech to mail that disgusting stuff to our inboxes, why don't we have the freedom to not have to look at it in our own homes on our PERSONAL computers? Let's hope the telemarketing "Do Not Call List" will lead to the government's putting the same type of restrictions on Spam.
I have written in the past about what we can do to eliminate Spam from our inboxes (filters, changing addresses, never replying, etc.), but that does not stop the abuse of the Internet by unorthodox or illegal users. Is it time for the government(s) to step in? It would have to be worldwide, as Spammers can live anywhere, and without a global law, there is very little one government could do. Can we as computer users do anything? The only thing I can think of is to get involved with some of the Anti-Spam groups (just key in "anti-spam group" in a search engine), write our representatives, and maybe even the U.N., letting them know we are tired of SPAM. Maybe if we all work together we can change the world.
'Til next week, (ComputerFAQ#166)
Robert
