for Nov. 5, 2003 Hi, All;
This week: A reader's Question
I can't find the search utility to clean the tmp files. I went under start - the only utilities that I could figure out is "3com utilities." I sniffed around everything under "programs." I'm trying to tidy up inside this computer - its been freezing quite a bit lately in Outlook Express. I thought it started behaving after going through scan disk, defrag, etc. I can't activate the address book either. Nor can I send any pictures I've stored up in here (computer). Is this a sign of old age? This computer is on its fourth year!
Wow! that is quite a list of issues. First, finding the Search menu. Below is a copy of the "Start Button." The Search menu button should be the fourth item below "Programs."
Second, the issues with Outlook: I can think of a couple of reasons for the problems. The first is the usual with most Microsoft programs, there being not enough memory in your PC--not hard disk space, but the "RAM" that is needed to run programs. This is especially true if you have updated your programs since you purchased your PC, as the memory may have been adequate four years ago with the versions of programs that came with your PC, but as one installs updates and patches, more memory is usually needed. The other issue would be the version of Outlook that is being used. The current version, Outlook Express version 6, can be downloaded from Microsoft.com with version 6 of Internet Explorer that includes Outlook Express Ver. 6.
I hope this helps. When program issues become chronic, the best solution is to take your PC to a repair shop, as they are difficult to troubleshoot without hands on.
'Til next week, (ComputerFAQ#163)
