Hi, All;

This week: Installing DSL

Last week Dave and I installed DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) in the Shopper offices. The installation is very straightforward with much of the configuring of the DSL modem done by the provider of the DSL line (CenturyTel in this valley) when it is plugged in. The only things we had to do were to use the supplied CD to finish the setup of the modem with the user ID and password (also supplied by Centurytel), and to set up our new email. In setting up the email, we did not have to change our email addresses, so they are the same and still handled by Tiger Mountain. The change was internal to our email program that pointed where it looks to access the Internet that we changed from Tiger Mountain to CenutryTel.

We are still learning about DSL and the few changes it requires. There were some changes to the TCP/IP programs on each MAC, but they also were easy, requiring just a change to the IP address that tells the Mac where to look to find its port to the Internet. It is too early to see if the higher speed is worth the additional cost. It is quite expensive but should be easy to justify at the Shopper in the time that is required to transmit the paper to the printer and in the research for the Recreation Report.

Dave has found DSL is 4 to 10 times faster than his 2-line 112k dial-up modem.

'Til next week, (ComputerFAQ#157)

Robert
