for Sept. 17, 2003 Hi, All;
This week: I want a new PC, What should I get? Part - 2
Last week,s article dealt with my experience in purchasing a new PC based on my personal budget and my system requirements. This week, I'd like to help you determine what kind of PC to buy when you're ready, and the three questions you need to answer are: (1) Do I want a desktop or a laptop? (2) What do I use my PC for? And (3) What kind of budget do I have? Having stated that, I recommend getting the biggest, "baddest" PC you can afford, and here's why: In response to consumer demand, software is not getting smaller or more efficient; the public likes bells and whistles. All of these require lots of disk space and memory, and that has become the industry standard. If your use of your PC includes photos and music, your requirements for disk space and memory are much larger than of someone who uses a PC for email and word processing. So, then, the ultimate issue of cost must be faced, based on what extras you want and need (printer, LCD monitor, better speakers, backup device). I hope this helps you determine your priorities when it is time to either upgrade your existing system or to purchase a brand new one. It is a fine balancing act between cost, manufacturer, and your needs and wants.
'Til next week, (ComputerFAQ#156)
