Hi, All;

This week: Some More Icons Explained

I received an email from one of my clients recently, saying that they were having problems installing some new software and that the "D" drive was full. I went and looked at the PC and found that there was no "D" drive on this PC and I discovered that the CD/ROM icon had been misinterpreted as a hard drive.

This is a picture of my "My Computer" display. It is hard to see in the paper so look at the display on your computer, as I explain each icon.

The first icon is that of the floppy drive (it shows a disk drive with a floppy next to it). The next two icons are hard drives for my "C" and "D" drives. Then there is the CD/ROM showing a CD next to the CD drive. The next icon is a hard drive on a network for a drive on my other networked PC. Next to each icon is the name of the device or hard drive. The CD/ROM shows the name of the CD that is in the drive. Next to the right is the type of device the icon represents, 31/2 inch Floppy Drive, Local Disk(s), Compact Disk, Network Drive, etc. Take a good look at all the icons around your PC's desktop; they are very helpful and kinda cute. As with most things, the more you know about your equipment, the easier it is to use.

'Til next week, (ComputerFAQ#146)
