Sept. 14, 2005 Dear Annie,
At the fair, I saw my dad's aunt in the sheep barn. Her husband had died recently. I didn't go to the funeral, and when I saw her all I could think about was how bad I felt for her, but I couldn't say anything! I've been kicking myself ever since for it! Seeing her without him was so unnatural, all I could think of was that all my life, I only remember seeing her one other time without him by her side, and that was when she was "out with the girls" I knew if I told her how sorry I was to hear her dear husband had died, I'd cry, so we just passed the moment with idle chit chat and parted. And guess what? I started crying in the cow barn, anyway! I should've given her my condolences. How can I make it right now?

Stop kicking yourself! Sometimes it's so hard to let yourself show emotions, especially when they hit you by surprise like that. Get a card, either a sympathy card or one of those "thinking of you" cards, clip this article, and send it to your great aunt. She'll understand. And you've learned a valuable lesson. Next time, bite the bullet, swallow the lump in your throat and tell whoever it is how bad you feel for them, even if you cry. It's okay. It only lets that person know how sincerely you mean what you're saying.
