Sept. 7, 2005 Dear Annie,
I was glad you wrote about your grandmother and about how rude people are when they become impatient with the elderly. When I wake up I feel twenty, ready to face the day and full of hope. But when I look in the mirror, there's this old lady smiling back at me, ready to face the grave and full of wrinkles! I don't know how this happened! I swear it was just yesterday I was baking cookies for the kids and waiting for my husband to come home from work so we could sit down to dinner. Now I spend my days alone, and my only surviving son is in his sixties! When I go out to get the mail or do some shopping, sometimes I'm slow. I wear bifocals, and sometimes it's hard to maneuver steps and curbs. Crossing the road is scary, but I'm determined not to become a hermit, and I can't drive any longer; so I must get out and walk sometimes. I thank the Lord I live in town, and I thank the people who are usually patient with an old lady slowly making it across the road.
Hilda M.,
Chehalis, WADear Hilda,
I'm barreling down that highway that leads over the hill, too, dear. Time passes by so quickly for me now. If the next twenty years pass as fast as those that just went, I'll be a senior citizen tomorrow. At least that's how it feels, isn't it? Thanks for your letter.
