Ask Annie

April 27, 2005

Dear Annie,

Reading about your parents made me look back on mine, but unfortunately they were both alcoholics who neglected and abused their children. It took years of growing up and Alanon meetings to realize it wasn't my fault they treated me the way they did. I still don't want to have children of my own because I'm afraid I'd never be a good parent, being raised the way I was. I'm glad you and your sister were blessed with wonderful people like your folks. If more parents were like that, there wouldn't be so many messed up people in the world.

Call Me Cupcake, Centralia, WA

Dear Cupcake

I'm glad you've taken advantage of the help available to try to overcome your childhood traumas. You're so right, defective parenting creates emotionally crippled children. If it's available to you, might I suggest counseling? You've come so far, but the fact that you're afraid you'd never be a good parent makes me think you could benefit from talking one on one to a professional. Thanks for writing and reminding us how important it is to be straight and sober, loving, supportive parents to our children.

Annie

Dear Readers'

Ads in the Shopper for yard sales to benefit families of those struck by medical tragedies remind me of something I want to ask of you. When donating items for sales, look carefully at what you are giving. No one expects you to give new, in the package things, but giving people who are already struggling with financial hardships your garbage so that they must pay to dispose of it is wrong. Broken bits and pieces, old underwear, these are things you should put in your trash can, not the donation bin. Be proud to help and give what can be sold.
