April 6 & 13, 2005 Annie for April 6:
Dear Readers,
Though we've only been married five years, my husband and I are friends with many couples who have seen four or five decades as man and wife. Perhaps this story I got via email explains why. There was once a man and woman who had been married for more than 60 years. They had shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other except that the little old woman had a shoe box in the top of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her about.
For all of these years, he had never thought about the box, but one day the woman became sick and it didn't seem that she would recover. In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the shoe box and took it to his wife's bedside. She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the box. When he opened it, he found two crocheted doilies and a stack of money totaling $25,000. He asked her about the contents.
"When we were to be married," she said, "my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and crochet a doily."
The little old man was so moved; he had to fight back tears. Only two precious doilies were in the box. She had only been angry with him two times in all those years of living and loving. He almost burst with happiness.
"Honey," he said, "that explains the doilies, but what about all of this money? Where did it come from?"
"Oh," she said, "That's the money I made from selling the doilies.Annie
Ask Annie for April 13:
Dear Annie,
Ever since the letters about the mama's boy, and the lady who was wondering if it was worth it to keep dating him, I've been wondering about the guy I'm seeing. You see, he's silly. It's a weird problem to be having with a man. We're not that young! He'll be forty soon, and was married before. I've never married, and I'm thirty-five. I like him because he's fun. Some of the men I've seen that are my age are so old and boring already, all uptight and fuddy-duddy, and all they talk about is their 401k plans. Not this one, but he takes it so far to the other extreme it's almost embarrassing. My parents don't know what to think of him, because when he's nervous he's even sillier, and makes corny jokes and says stupid things. His childish behavior makes it so people don't realize how intelligent he is. I told him that, and he didn't call for days. After a long week at work, I like a man who can let go and have fun all weekend, but sometimes I want him to act his age.
Rena the Nurse
No Town Given
Dear Rena,
Anything in excess gets old, quick! Some zany behavior keeps the doldrums away, but every day, all the time? Who has the patience for that? I am curious though, exactly what kind of inane things he does. Put the fry basket on his head at the burger joint? Hang his face out the window going down the road, like a dog? Anyway, you're the only one who can decide, my dear, how much is too much. Do you date for entertainment value only or are you looking for Mr. Right? You may have to be cruel to be kind and let the goofy guy go.
