Ask Annie

Dec. 15, 2004

Dear Annie,
Thank you for having the courage to print that letter from the man who was afraid to take his wife out because of her drinking. People sweep that stuff under the rug this time of year, when everybody's partying, but there are some who just can't drink. I was married to one, but he killed himself in a drunk driving accident five years ago. All I can do is miss him and thank God he didn't kill anyone but himself. Please remind your readers that all those white crosses beside the highways used to be people, folks that loved and were loved. Kids and grandmothers, people like my husband and innocent victims. No one wants to be a party pooper and very few admit they've had too many and shouldn't drive, but this year I hope your readers will think twice about that, and all come home alive.
Cries Every Christmas in Winlock, WA

Dear Cries,
I'm glad you wrote. It wasn't easy for you, but it might make a spark fly in just the right person's mind one holiday night, and save their life. Thank you.
Annie

Dear Annie,
I dread this time of year. I can't put my Christmas lights up anymore, and hate to ask my sons. They're so busy. Please remind young people that it's not so easy to get around on ladders once you're elderly.
Gran Apple, Morton, WA

Dear Gran,
Your sons might not realize how much it means to you to have those cheery lights up for Christmas. I would ask them. If they don't come out and hang them up for you, tell someone at your church or the senior center. They'll know someone who'd like to help you out. Please don't be too proud to ask around.
Annie
