Dear Readers,

One of the advantages of parenting two families 15 years apart is that, hopefully, the latter offspring grow up with more mature guidance. In other words, I'd like to think I'm a better mom at forty-three than I was at twenty-three. God was merciful to my older children, and made them both brilliant and independent. He also shed His grace on me, blessing me with a baby with problems when I was old enough to have the patience to deal with them. Giving birth to a child with birth defects puts the whole world into new perspective for the parents. I've gained appreciation for the compassion that so many people have for others, and fear for the cruelty I know my daughter will endure at the hands of some. Preparing for the holidays this year, though, I keep thinking back to a time in the 1980's, or early 1990's, when a book called, "The Hurried Child," was popular. I remember my mother, a great child advocate and a woman who has devoted her life to helping children, worrying about my son being rushed through life. That's one thing we don't have to worry about with our developmentally delayed daughter. Life moves slower for her. She didn't walk until she was five, and at five and a half, is still learning to talk. Today I wrapped presents while she played with ribbon. Watching her smile, I saw that the magic of Christmas won't be lost on her for years, maybe ever. She won't be disappointed, or believe a bah-humbug, or need to wonder whether Santa's real. For her, lights, music, pretty paper and people treating each other just a little bit better than usual will be enough to decorate her world. Lord, please let it be that easy for the rest of us.
