Ask Annie

Nov. 10, 2004

Dear Annie,

I know my wife reads your column, so I was hoping you'd print this. It really bothers me that she won't shave her legs. We've only been married a few years, but she's let herself get lazy in that time. She used to come to bed all smooth, and now it feels like I'm sleeping with a logger. She says when I shave my beard, she'll shave her legs. I've had hair on my chin for a decade now. I'd feel naked without it. I even offered to keep my beard better trimmed, but that wasn't enough for her. Maybe if you tell her women are much more attractive without stubble all over their legs, she'll listen.

Justin, Morton, WA

Dear Justin,

Have you ever heard the saying, "What's good for the goose is good for the gander?" Prepare to shed hair, my dear, if you want old logger legs to shave. It has been my experience that women will hold out in a standoff like this much longer than men, and really, why should she do what you want when you have no intentions of doing what she'd like? Perhaps getting an itchy kiss bothers her as much as rubbing upon stubble bothers you. Your comment about your wife "letting herself get lazy" doesn't sit well with me. I hope that you are not one of those young men with very chauvinistic ideas. You and your wife are both going to look very different from what you do now, as you get older. Don't look down on her from above your pot belly, unkempt beard and possibly unwashed self and sneer about how she has let herself go.
