Ask Annie

Oct. 27, 2004

Dear Annie,

Who do you think is braver, a soldier or a fireman?

(e-mailed to Annie, no signature)

Dear You,

Soldiers, sailors, firemen, and policemen are all heroes, but no one is more courageous than an old person. That's right, that elderly lady that lives next door to you faces more fear every day than you imagine. Every night she sleeps alone and prays she'll be safe. Each visit to the doctor brings new health scares. Even walking around is perilous. A fall could immobilize her, permanently. And the finances are always a fright! If she didn't own her house, she'd probably be homeless, since the medical bills for even healthy seniors' prescriptions are atrocious. When she does go shopping, she's ignored by most or seen as an impediment to their hurried travels. Prices go up, but her income doesn't. Still, she marvels at the fresh produce, the abundance in American grocery stores. She thanks God for every single thing she has, every day. Old ladies and old men are the ones I marvel at. They know what's important in life, and their fortitude should be admired.

Annie

Dear Annie,

Why don't those people who were worried about how their families would embarrass them at Thanksgiving just stay home? Or go to a restaurant? I thought your answer was lame.

Dear Thought,

Even though some people are afraid their families will embarrass them, they still love them and want to spend special days with them. That's why I said, "Perhaps your family will surprise you, in a good way." Why add to these poor people's trepidation? I think they should at least start the trip, enter the house with a positive spin on it, and maybe the whole day will be better than they feared.
