Ask Annie

Sept. 29, 2004

Dear Readers,

As my years go by as "Annie," one theme keeps repeating itself in your letters to me. That theme is a ribbon of discontent. Many people have written to me over the years with an axe to grind. They would like me to help them bring someone's shortcomings out for everyone to see. They're unhappy with the flaggers at the construction going on near their home, a neighbor takes dogs to the shelter that "aren't really strays," they should've been hired for a position they applied for instead of that bozo that was hired, and on and on. I like getting mail to Annie, but I wonder at the dissatisfaction therein. You people aren't victims. You don't have it so bad. Don't stop writing, but please, stop whining! So you didn't get the job. There could be any number of reasons for that, including that God has a better opportunity in store for you. As far as the "dognapper" letter, I had to wonder what dogs that "aren't really strays" are doing away from their homes. Every community has leash laws, either city or county wide. None encourage animals running free. Construction sites are inspected by those entities in charge, and I find it hard to believe that employees that supposedly aren't trained or certified are working there. It just wouldn't happen, even in the outer reaches of our backwater counties! We are lucky people. We live in a beautiful, free country. Happiness, security, even wealth are not flitting through the air, dropping on the few by fortune or fate. They are choices we make. Today, make the choice to stop being a complainer and start appreciating your privileges. Put that energy into your resume instead of a diatribe against the unfair system that keeps you underemployed!

Annie
